There was a warm welcome for Moville’s impressive new footbridge which was officially opened by local councillor, Martin Farren last Friday.
The new structure will accommodate not only local pedestrians but the 500 plus students at the nearby community college. Construction was completed on time and on budget to a very high standard and features intricate art deco type detail and will be a wonderful addition to the town.
Cllr Farren paid tribute to all involved in the project and described the finished work as a “tremendous boost” for the area.
He also thanked his council colleagues for giving him the honour of opening the new facility and praised Donegal County Council staff involved in bringing the footbridge from a concept to a reality.
Senior Executive Engineer in the Inishowen Municipal District, Seamus Hopkins added the best way to describe the new art deco bridge was “beautiful” while architect Michael Carr, Carr and Co, Civil Engineers, Ballybofey also thanked everyone involved in the project.
The bridge, which was built by Joseph McMenamin & Sons, Glebe, Stranorlar, cost €145,000, spans 21.5m over the Bredagh River and is 3m wide.
It has been constructed from concrete and replaces a narrow footway on the existing road bridge and will help provide a safe link from the town to the school and other local amenities.
Speaking at the opening Moville Community College representative, fifth-year student Lauren praised the work and welcomed the safety benefits for the school and community and said students at the college had many other ideas they could suggest to help make their town safer too.
